HEAD ELDER'S PROFILE
Elder
Profile Elder
Name:
John A. Thomas 1.
How would you describe your ministry here at Evanston Alliance?
As Head Elder, I provide leadership for the Board of Elders in the
absence of the Senior Pastor. I
assist the Senior Pastor and the pastoral staff in maintaining the
pastoral ministry of the church. As
an elder I am also charged with the general spiritual oversight and
welfare of the congregation. I
enjoy teaching membership classes, stewardship classes, and I am also in
the process of becoming certified as a Christian conciliator through
Peacemaker Ministries through which I hope to minister not only in our
congregation, but in the Rocky Mountain District, and in my profession as
a lawyer as well. 2.
What motivates you in ministry?
I am motivated in ministry by remembering what Christ has done for
me. As the Apostle Paul wrote
in 2 Corinthians 5:17-19, “17Therefore, if anyone is in
Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
18All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself
through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19that
God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s
sins against them. And he has
committed to us the message of reconciliation.” 3.
What is in your CD player right now?
I don’t have anything in my CD player right now.
My 1997 Camry doesn’t have one.
But the last time I used my wife’s vehicle, which does have a CD
player in it, I listened to Dr. Tony Evans’ preaching series entitled, Hungry
for God. 4.
Who has been the most influential person in your Christian walk
with Christ? Other
than Christ Himself, my wife, Kimberly; the men in the small group where I
was led to Christ; the pastors who have mentored me: Dan Wetzel. Dan
Vallier, Gene McKenzie, and Ron Lotz; Lon Kenneda, who was the head elder
when I became an elder; and Tim Owen, our Rocky Mountain District
Superintendent with whom I serve on the District Executive Committee. 5.
What do you do to unwind and de-stress?
I enjoy dinners and quiet evenings with my wife, walking my dog,
playing golf, and fellowshiping with other believers.
